Our offices register and enroll all new students who come from other countries or who speak a language other than English at home. We give new students an English assessment (IPT) to determine whether they qualify to participate in the English for Speakers of Other Languages program. If a student qualifies, he or she will receive additional help in English from a tutor and/ or a teacher. SJSD has three ESOL center schools on the elementary level: Edison, Humboldt, and Lake Contrary. At the ESOL center schools, an ESOL endorsed teacher provides direct language instruction to English Language Learners for a time period based on students’ abilities. ESOL endorsed teachers are also housed at all four middle schools: Bode, Robidoux, Spring Garden, and Truman, as well as Central High School. ESOL tutoring services are available for all elementary schools, Benton High School and Lafayette High School. ESOL teachers and tutors work in cooperation with classroom teachers to ensure a quality education for English Learners and serve as liaisons between schools and the ESOL office. ESOL professional development opportunities are available for teachers, administrators and support staff. Topics include: cultural diversity, accommodations, and testing. Registration begins the third week in August and continues throughout the school year. |
